Remember To Be Happy

I watched him pedal down the street

Smiling at the site of him

Thinking how much I’m enjoying

Watching him grow

And yet, how much I miss

The little boy he once was…

It struck me suddenly

This is often life…

Wishing for something to be different

Or to be the way it was

Forgetting to enjoy the now

“Remember to be happy”

Are the words that filled my head

And my heart welled up with joy

I took a mental snapshot -

No camera in my hand

But a picture nonetheless I know

Will be forever etched in my memory

Remember to be happy

Be happy for what is – right now

Be happy for what is to come

And be happy for what has passed

But mostly remember to be happy

In the moment…

Every moment…

All the time

Today

Today I woke up early

And stretched my aching back

I finished up some laundry

And I felt ready to attack

Ready to attack my day

Ready to get going

And when it was time to wake the kids

I did so with calm, knowing

Knowing that to start the day

With hugs & smiles in a hush

Is much better than starting off

With bells & yells in a rush

And because we were not rushed

The morning was nice and fun

We got out the door on time

So we didn’t even have to run

Run around like we often do,

When we’re running late

Trying to do so many things at once

Because we put so much on our plate

And the reality is we can accomplish a lot

We can often do more than we know

The trick is not to move quickly

Instead it is to go slow

Slow down and take your time

Enjoying each moment you’re in

Because in the next moment the past is gone

And the future is yet to begin

You

Do you plan your day?

Or do you wander aimlessly through it?

Let life take you where it may

Or do you know where you want to get?

Do you know the roads to take?

Or do you veer off course?

Allowing the decisions you make

To lead you to the source?

The source where all the answers lie

…where the truth is all we know

Vast & endless like the sky

This life seems like a show

I am watching from the outside

And yet, through my own eyes, too

I feel myself fill with pride

As I accomplish what I set out to do

I look back upon the day as it ends

I see where I could improve

To have a plan yet allow myself to bend

And most importantly, continue to move

Moving forward bit by bit

Sometimes with giant strides

Taking time to sop & sit

Remembering to enjoy the ride

So whether you plan or choose to wander

Embrace what you do

Every so often stop and ponder

Whether you really appreciate you

I’m Watching…

I’m watching my heart walk outside me

It has actually been broken in two

Half is walking around with my daughter

The other half found in my son’s shoes

Still, I feel my heart inside

And I see it when I look at my love

I’m in awe of how my heart keeps growing

Is this how God feels watching from above?

When my kids are sick

How my heart truly aches

And when they are hurting

My heart all but breaks

When they are laughing

My heart laughs as well

And when they smile

It’s as if heaven just fell

And I’m living inside it

So happy, so blessed…

My heart is walking outside me

& this feeling’s the best!

Connection

A spider’s web is full of strings

All connected – intertwined

In life, each of us a string

That gets strengthened when combined

We all crave connections…

We reach out and seek human touch

And as we bond with people

Our lives improves so much

No man is an island

The phrase is trite, but true

Each of us part of a network

- Your network centered around you

As the center you must connect

With people far and near

While the connections change and grow

Through the days, weeks, and years

Never discount the importance of one…

You don’t know where the connection may lead

Remember the power of joining together

In the end we all get what we need

Accident

“I had an accident”

My son will declare

“That’s OK, right?”

His question floats in the air

“Yes,” I say, “that’s OK”

And I mean it, too

Because accidents are not something

People mean to do

We came upon a car crash

“What’s that?” he quickly asks

“Those cars had an accident” I say

While staying focused on my task

“That’s OK, right?”

He says once again

“Yes I agree”

I answer him

There are things that happen

That we don’t mean to do

Simply put, they are accidents

That happen to me and you

Accidents do happen…

Sometimes we are to blame

It may not be on purpose

But it happened just the same

So if you’re not on purpose

-         Living with desire for a dream

Does your life feel like an accident?

And you, a bystander at the scene?

I know sometimes I feel that way

- A little lost and out of control

When I forget my purpose in life

My mission slows to a stroll

Sometimes a stroll is good…

It re-connects me with things

That I may have forgotten along the way

And my heart happily sings

It sings the song of my soul

My purpose for being here

My life is not an accident

Of that I am quite clear.

No Time

You say you have no time

But we all have the same

It’s what we do with the time

That affects our life’s game

I wish I had more time…

It’s something often said,

But realize more time is always coming

Unless of course, you’re dead

They say time flies when you’re having fun

And I agree it’s true

It can also go painfully slow

When doing something you don’t want to do

But really time never changes

It does not speed up or slow down

We only change our response to it

And we smile…or we frown

Think about the last time

You said you had no time

Who did you say that to?

Was it just a line?

What did you make more important?

What did you take time to do?

Think about how you would feel

If someone didn’t make time for you

How often do you make the time

For the most important person you know?

Often we forget to make the time

For ourselves, and we let it show

It shows in how we treat ourselves

And sometimes how we treat others, too

Because it’s hard to keep caring for others

When you’re not caring for you
